Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary focuses on teaching a small group of high-frequency words that can be used across many different environments, activities, and communication situations. Unlike topic-specific vocabulary, core words such as go, want, help, stop, more, in, and you are highly flexible and allow individuals to communicate for a wide range of purposes throughout the day.

Using evidence-based AAC and language teaching strategies, core vocabulary supports the development of functional communication, language expansion, social interaction, and independence. These systems can be used with speech-generating devices, communication boards, signs, visuals, and natural speech to help children and adults express needs, feelings, ideas, and choices more effectively.

Therapy is tailored to each individual’s communication profile and may include modelling, aided language stimulation, play-based interaction, parent coaching, and school support.
